Kanal on the Soča: Bridge, Culture and Trails
Visitors can swim in the Soča in Kanal; at the same time, the river has carved a 400-metre-long gorge here into Lower Cretaceous limestone. On the right bank of the Soča, there is an established access point to the water at the Korada campsite. Kanal Beach on the Soča is a sandy beach.
Water, Trails and Sculptures
Pečno Park has a circular hiking trail with views of Kanal. It also features a mountain-bike singletrack trail and a Forma Viva sculpture garden. The different types of trails offer different options for planning your day: the circular hiking trail provides a different form of movement from the singletrack, while the sculpture garden adds a cultural element in the same park. Visitors can therefore distinguish between hiking, mountain biking and viewing art, and then compare the other named routes according to their respective directions. The hiking trail following in the footsteps of Valentin Stanič leads via Sabotin and Korada to Kanal. The Jelenk mountain trail runs from Kanal via Kanalski Vrh to Jelenk, while the route “Na Kanalski vrh pod grebenom Jelenka” leads to Kanal along a local road.
Other places in the same travel region include Kostanjevica na Krasu, Šempas, Branik, Podsabotin, Renče, Zalošče, Bilje and Šmartno.
Bridge, Squares and History
Kanalski most was built in 1580; its present appearance dates from the renovation in 1920. The Soška kolesarska pot crosses this bridge. Kontrada is the oldest settlement centre in Kanal and, during the summer months, the main venue for cultural activities.
Neptunov vodnjak stands in the middle of Kanal’s square. The fountain was built in 1815 and extensively restored in 1876. Cerkev Marijinega Vnebovzetja stands on the site where a Romanesque church once stood. Its three-sided apse with a star-ribbed vault is said to be the oldest of its kind in Slovenia.
Art and Memorial Sites
The KERAMOST Gallery is located in the immediate vicinity of the stone bridge over the Soča in the centre of Kanal. Solo and group exhibitions are held there throughout the year. The Hitchhiker Museum in Kanal ob Soči was the first museum of its kind in Slovenia.
The Rika Debenjak Memorial Room is located in the renovated Fiščeva hiša on Kontrada. Selected documents are displayed in the memorial room. Thus, Kanal brings together a range of cultural sites, from its historic settlement centre and sacred architecture to exhibitions and documented memorabilia.
Events and Local Traditions
The traditional Bridge Jumps event takes place at Kanalski most every August. Every year in March or April, a traditional commemorative hike is held through the surrounding area in honour of Valentin Stanič’s work.
Ribiški praznik is a traditional fishermen’s festival in Kanal. The festival includes a culinary offering centred on fried trout. On this day, chub fishing takes place in the morning.
