Podsabotin: Trails, Churches and Wine

Podsabotin draws attention to Mount Sabotin: a challenging 11 km trail leads from here to the lookout post on Mount Sabotin and back. Certain sections are very steep and rocky.

Trails

The Podsabotinska hiking trail begins at the bus stop in Podsabotin. It takes 1 hour and 50 minutes and has an elevation gain of 480 metres. From Podsabotin, visitors can continue on foot to Mount Sabotin.

The road connections also provide a precise picture of the local routes. A road from Solkan to Hum in Brda passes through Podsabotin. The road to Mount Sabotin through Podsabotin, which passes the Pri Bregarju agritourism farm, is unpaved and unsuitable for motor vehicles.

Numerous hamlets that once belonged to Šentmaver were quite isolated on the slopes of Sabotin until the construction of the so-called Osimo Road.

Culture

At the centre of the local history is the original Church of Saint Nicholas. It was built in the 18th century, destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt during the interwar period. The building has a larger rectangular nave, a three-sided apse and a bell tower on the southern wall of the nave. This bell tower was restored in the 1990s.

The renewal of the hamlet is also connected with the church: after the First World War, architect Fabiani designed a plan to renew the hamlet around the Church of Saint Nicholas. A monument to Mirko Zimic and to other fallen soldiers and victims of the Second World War was also erected in Podsabotin.

Another trace of church history can be found in the hamlet of Podsenica. The rural Church of Saint Lawrence has a stone bell gable. It was destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt soon afterwards.

Cuisine

Local produce ranges from agricultural products to wine. Kmetija Jericijo in Podsabotin produces honey, olive oil and seasonal fruit. By arrangement, it offers tours of the olive grove and apiary, as well as tastings.

Valentinčič Turizem in Podsabotin offers wine tastings, cellar tours and wine sales. The range includes the indigenous Rebula from Brda as well as several French varieties, including Sauvignon Vert, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Pinot Noir and Merlot.
