Vitovlje – Hotel, Vitovska Circular Trail and Chestnut Festival

The Vitovska Circular Trail follows stony paths along the slope below Čaven and offers views across the Vipava Valley. It starts at the car park next to the venue in Vitovlje. At 929 metres, Kopitnik is the highest point of the trail, where visitors can watch hang-gliders and paragliders take flight.

Hiking and Nature

The annual hiking day on the Vitovska Circular Trail takes place in November. It starts at the venue in Vitovlje, lasts about four hours, and is followed by a convivial gathering. The route also includes Napoleon’s Road, which was built during the Illyrian Provinces.

The themed hike “Od Lijaka do Sekulaka” passes through Vitovlje. The footpath of the same name leads past springs, vineyards, cultivated fields, and chestnut groves.

The circular trail to St. Mary’s Church is also a nature trail with information boards. Another landscape feature is Lake Vitovsko: it is the only natural lake in the Vipava Valley, 7 metres wide, 10 metres long, and up to 1 metre deep.

Culture and History

The old pilgrimage church of St. Mary in Vitovlje was built in the 14th century on a rocky outcrop above the village. It also served as an anti-Ottoman camp. On the way to Krnica stands a memorial to Saint Lucy. It is associated with a ritual in which hikers wash their eyes with water from a crevice in the rock; according to legend, this is meant to improve their eyesight.

In one of Vitovlje’s hamlets, visitors can see a memorial room dedicated to the local sculptor and woodcarver Stanko Hrovatin. Hrovatin devoted a large part of his life to working with wood and stone.

For many years, the Vitovlje Cultural and Tourism Association has organised a torchlight procession at the end of the year. It starts at the venue in the hamlet of Užiče and leads to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Vitovlje.

Traditions

Vitovlje is home to the autochthonous Vitovski maron chestnut variety. The Chestnut Festival takes place every year on the third weekend of October. It was first organised in 1997 as a one-day event and was later extended to two days.

At the Chestnut Festival, raw and roasted chestnuts as well as chestnut dishes are offered. There are also stalls selling local handicrafts, exhibitions, children’s entertainment, and music.
