Lokve is a village situated in a forest-surrounded valley at 965 m above sea level. The place combines a rich diversity of landscapes and trails with winter sports opportunities and cultural traces reaching back to former crafts and more recent history.

Nature

In fine weather, the summit of Poldanovec offers a spectacular view. Its northern face is considered the boldest steep wall in the Trnovski gozd area. The trail leading to Lazna reaches Goveji kal, a traditional watering place and one of the last distinctive features of the village of Lokve. A rampart also formed along the boundary between private and state-owned land when stones were removed to create meadows.

Winter Sports

The Lokve ski resort is located in the immediate vicinity of the village of Lokve. The ski slope lies on the sunny south-facing side at the level of the village and has an elevation difference of 100 m. The ski resort is ideal for beginners and has a free toboggan run as well as groomed cross-country ski trails for young people and adults.

Hiking and Cycling

The “Glass Routes” trail network comprises almost 30 km of hiking trails between Lokve, Lazna and Gorenja Trebuša; Lokve is an excellent starting point. The easy “Pot za zidom” hiking trail runs around the village, mostly through beech forest, is approximately 7 km long and takes about 2.5 hours. The “Lokve – Poldanovec – Lokve” hiking trail is 7 to 7.5 km long, takes 2 to 2.5 hours and reaches an elevation of 1,299 m.

For cycling, the “Pod vrhovi Trnovske planote” route starts in Lokve. It follows forest gravel roads beneath the main peaks of the Trnovska planota: Poldanovec, Ojstrovica, Mali Golak and Nagnovec. The route is suitable for families and recreational cyclists.

Culture and Crafts

The Lokve section of the exhibition on forest glassmaking can be seen at the school, in the premises of KS Lokve-Lazna, at Gostilna Lokve and at the Winkler guesthouse. At Gostilna Lokve and the Winkler guesthouse, you can also try the glassmakers’ dessert. The annual “Wood & Stone Lokve” sculpture colonies create a Forma viva in public spaces.

A small museum of the cooperage trade in Lokve can be visited by prior arrangement. The building of the former primary school in Lokve houses a memorial plaque commemorating 38 fallen NOV fighters and victims of fascist violence from Lokve and Lazna. The Church of Sv. Antona Padovanskega is also among the sights in Lokve.
