Jereka – Hotels, Culture and Trails in the Upper Bohinj Valley

Jereka is one of the villages in the Upper Bohinj Valley where the Otepanje custom is maintained. During this tradition, masked New Year singers go from house to house. In Jereka, Otepanje takes place on New Year's Eve, 31 December. Holding the tradition on New Year's Eve clearly places it within the period around the turn of the year.

The Church of Saint Margaret stands along the road on a hill before Jereka in the Upper Bohinj Valley. From there, views extend across large parts of Bohinj and the surrounding Julian Alps mountain range. The historic trail from Jereka to Koprivnik was reinforced in the 18th century to allow the unobstructed transport of iron ore and charcoal from Pokljuka. The sixth stage of the Juliana Trail also leads down through the forests and pastures of Pokljuka to Jereka in the Upper Bohinj Valley. From Jereka, it continues through Češnjica, Srednja vas and Studor to Stara Fužina. The places named mark the further course of this stage after the section through Pokljuka.
