Čiginj combines historically significant memorials with trails through the landscape and a climbing area. Those who take a closer look at the village will find various forms of commemoration, access to the Walk of Peace on Mengore, a footpath to Benečija and a climbing area with defined difficulty grades.

Culture

The Čiginj monument to the fallen fighters of the National Liberation Army (NOV) and the victims of wartime violence is classified as a memorial heritage site. Čiginj is also home to the Znamenje pri Ušniku, which is protected at its authentic location.

A distinctive feature of the villagescape was created as part of the „Nomen est omen“ project: marble plaques bearing the names of the farmsteads were installed on 70 houses. This made Čiginj the first village in Slovenia to do so. The Čiginj monument to the National Liberation Army (NOB) was erected in 1969. It consists of a torch-shaped concrete column with five plaques naming villages, as well as additional plaques bearing the names of those who fell.

Trails

The Walk of Peace, called Pot miru in Slovenian, leads to Mengore. Its access route passes cleared Austro-Hungarian defensive positions on the Soča Front. The Walk of Peace to Mengore begins at the NOB monument on the hill beside the road between Volče and Čiginj. The path leading from the Volče–Čiginj road to Mengore is a somewhat more demanding, unmarked trail.

A footpath also leads from Čiginj via Laze, past a waterfall, through Krasja and Dol and over Sleme to Benečija.

Climbing

The Pri Čiginju climbing area in Čiginj (Tolmin) has 45 routes graded from 4c to 7c. The area features high-quality white limestone. From the parking area, the foot of the Pri Čiginju climbing wall can be reached on foot in about five minutes by crossing a field to the edge of the forest.

The Čiginj NOB monument is located on the right-hand side of the road when traveling from Nova Gorica toward Tolmin, beyond Čiginj and just before Volče, opposite the Gostol factory.
