Hotels in Šentrupert: Gothic Churches and the Steklasova Hiking Trail

The Cerkev sv. Ruperta is considered one of the outstanding examples of Gothic architectural history from the second half of the 15th century. It preserves remains of medieval frescoes as well as Gothic-Secessionist ornamentation by Koželj from 1897.

The Cerkev sv. Frančiška Ksaverija on Vesela Gora was consecrated in 1735. The church has an octagonal central structure and diagonally twisted bell towers. In 1760, it was decorated with frescoes by Anton Tušek from Škofja Loka. The Stations of the Cross in Šentrupert are also part of the town's sacred history: they were erected in 1730. They include a Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, built in 1749 based on the model of the Holy Sepulchre in Palestine.

Duha in Viher has been documented since 1275 and preserves a semicircular Romanesque portal. Its sanctuary and triumphal arch are decorated with frescoes dating from 1500 to 1510. Another historical landmark is Grad Škrljevo, first mentioned in 1043. The complex has a Romanesque core that was later partly rebuilt in the Gothic period and extended in the Baroque period.

Dežela kozolcev is an open-air museum with 19 different hayracks. These come from the Mirna Valley, with the exception of one hayrack from the area around Ivančna Gorica. The museum covers 2.5 hectares of landscaped grounds and has a 1 km-long network of walking paths. Expert-guided tours and presentations focus on the historical development and construction of hayracks.

In the area around Šentrupert, the Kurent family collection at the Janezkova farmstead displays agricultural implements that illustrate fieldwork at the beginning of the 20th century. Also in the area, the Kurent family's wine cellar preserves a black kitchen. You can view, study and even try out the implements displayed by the Kurent family collection.

The Steklasova Hiking Trail is 20 km long and can be walked in both directions in two sections. It leads from the square in front of the Cerkev sv. Ruperta to Vesela Gora at an elevation of 324 m. The Baroque Cerkev sv. Frančiška Ksaverija and the Barbova graščina are located there.

Above the village of Šentrupert, a full-moon night hike leads to Nebesa. During the Nebesa hike, local food and drinks are served above Šentrupert. Thus, in addition to the longer Steklasova Trail, the town's range of events also includes a night hike with its own regional character.

At the traditional Cviček Šentrupert event announced for 5 June 2026, wines from local winemakers will be tasted. The date links the name of the town with a specific insight into local viticulture.
