Trebnje – Art, History and Landscape

Trebnje is closely associated with the Galerija likovnih samorastnikov Trebnje, which has been regarded as Slovenia’s central institution for naive art since 1971. The gallery houses around 1,500 works of art by more than 300 artists. Visitors can see a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions; various events are also held there.

Culture

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary stands in the centre of Trebnje. The present three-nave building was constructed in 1443 in the late Gothic style. Its interior includes a main altar by the woodcarver Janežič, featuring a painting of the Assumption of Mary by Matevž Langus, as well as a Stations of the Cross also created by Langus. The presbytery contains frescoes by Koželj.

Another permanent exhibition is located at the Centru za izobraževanje in kulturo Trebnje. The exhibition Rastoča knjiga is dedicated to people who have had a major influence on the life of the town. At the Knjižnica Pavla Golie Trebnje, a memorial room also commemorates the poet and playwright Pavel Golia; the room was established in 1983.

A geographical feature is also marked in Trebnje: the 15th meridian runs through the town. At the western entrance to the town, a sign and a radio-controlled clock indicate this; the clock displays the exact Central European Time.

History and Landscape

Trebanjski grad, also known as Treffen, was built around the year 1000. The complex stands on a hill below Bukovje, on the right bank of the Temenica River. It comprises a square tower with Roman foundations, a round tower with a secret exit dating from the period of the Ottoman incursions, and a left and right wing dating from the early 16th century.

The Temeniška Valley forms part of the wider landscape context. It is considered the longest blind valley in Slovenia and complements Trebnje’s historical connections with a distinctive landscape feature.

Hiking and Activities

The Baragova pohodna pot begins in Trebnje in front of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary. The circular route is 18 km long and has been popular with hikers for a decade and a half. Most of the route passes through pleasant woodland or meadow landscapes.

The Medgeneracijska točka Temenica provides space for exercise and shared activities, with 15 pétanque courts and four bowling lanes. Recreation and various competitions take place there.

Events and Local Specialties

The event Iz trebanjskega koša brings together local specialties, creative activities and a varied programme for all generations.
