Simeiz on Crimea’s Southern Coast: Shoreline, Mountains and Travel Planning

Simeiz is a resort settlement. It lies 18 km west of Yalta, along the coast of the Black Sea. The majestic mountains of At-Bash (Horse’s Head) and Ai-Petri, as well as the cliffs of Chaka-Tash and Nishan-Kaya, rise above the settlement.

The scenery here is picturesque. Huge rocks surround the lower part of the settlement. Many years ago, they broke away from the Crimean mountain range and gradually took on intricate shapes. West of the resort, along the shore, lies Mount Koshka (Cat Mountain). From the shore, you can see its “head,” its curved “back” along the slope, and its “tail.” The mountain seems to be “admiring” the sea. Taurian tribes once lived here, and if you follow the “back” of the cat, you can see the ruins of ancient buildings. Nearby are the Diva Rock, which extends into the sea; the remains of Monk Mountain, destroyed by a storm in January 1931; Panea; and Swan’s Wing, named for its resemblance to a bird’s wing. Myths and legends are associated with several of these giants.

Another attraction in Simeiz is the park in New Simeiz, at the foot of Mount Ai-Panda. It was laid out between 1930 and 1935. Native woodland grows here, consisting mainly of junipers, oaks, turpentine trees and jasmine. It is the only place where you can see groves of wild pistachio trees and natural thickets of tamarisk growing along the shore. Mount Koshka looks down on the park from the west, while to the south lies a quiet blue bay whose waters lap at Diva Rock and the surrounding stones.

Sergei Rachmaninoff, Konstantin Paustovsky, Ostap Vyshnya and other figures of Russian culture lived and worked in Simeiz. Leo Tolstoy said of the town: “It is here that those who want to live well should begin their lives… secluded, beautiful, imposing…”

Simeiz as a small seaside resort

Simeiz lies on Crimea’s southern coast and is known for its dramatic rocky setting, smaller bathing areas and proximity to other places between Alupka and Yalta. It is better suited to a quiet stay and short excursions than to a packed city itinerary. When planning, take the hillside location, routes to the water, accommodation standards and seasonal infrastructure into account. Anyone considering a trip today should carefully check the latest information about travel, safety and local conditions before booking.

Choosing Simeiz for the coast and scenery

Simeiz suits travelers looking to combine a smaller coastal settlement, rocky scenery and short walks with a quiet stay. The hillside setting can make walks more strenuous than they appear on a map. Those interested in comparing natural landscapes and architecture can combine Simeiz with Alushta or Gurzuf. For a short visit, prioritize the shore, viewpoints and a return route that is within reach.

Before making concrete plans, check current transport conditions, access to coastal paths, accommodation and the weather. Older information about bathing spots or facilities may be out of date. When walking along cliffs and slopes, sure footing, water and sufficient daylight are essential. Given the current situation in Crimea, the safety and entry information provided by the relevant authorities should guide every travel decision.

Combining the coast, rocks and mountain trails

Simeiz is suited to a stay that brings together the coast and mountain scenery. The seaside rocks, settlement and hillside trails do not form a short, level loop. Take accommodation, footwear, heat and the return route into account when planning the day.

Along the southern coast, Crimea, Yalta, Alupka, Alushta and Foros can be compared as destinations with distinct local and landscape highlights. Nature and scenery and Relaxation can help you choose between a walk, a coastal stay and a quieter getaway. Travel and transport should be factored into the plan early, given the changes in elevation.

Before deciding to travel, check Entry requirements and documents, Travel preparation, Travel checklist and schedule and the latest travel and safety advice for Ukraine.
