Sibir Airlines: From Sibir to S7

The airline Sibir Airlines (S7; IATA code C7) was established in 1992 as a spin-off of a division of the former state-owned Aeroflot. Its home airport is in the city of Novosibirsk in the Siberian part of Russia.

Since beginning operations as an independent airline, Sibir Airlines—now S7-Sibir—has pursued an ambitious expansion strategy. Within a few years, it grew from a small regional airline operating across vast Siberia into a major player among Russian airlines. Following its mergers with Vnukovo Airlines and ArmAvia in 2001–2002, Sibir became Russia’s second-largest airline. It had already displaced its major competitor Aeroflot from second place for domestic flights in 2003, and carried more domestic passengers than any other Russian airline. According to the company, S7, or Sibir Airlines, operated more than 32,000 flights in 2005, carrying 4.2 million passengers.

S7’s main hubs are Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk, Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, and the airport in Irkutsk. Sibir has a fleet of nearly 40 modern wide-body aircraft and regularly serves all the major cities in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It carries passengers to 20 countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Today, Sibir ranks among the world’s 50 largest airlines.

On March 15, 2006, Sibir Airlines changed its name to “S7 Airlines.” The new name derives from the airline’s former call sign. The old aircraft livery, once a rather dull blue and white, was also replaced with a vivid green design. The aircraft’s Cyrillic lettering was updated as well; they now fly with Latin lettering.

In addition to codeshare agreements with several foreign airlines, such as Germany’s Air Berlin, cooperation through the Oneworld alliance in particular helped stabilize Sibir/S7’s position. S7—the former Sibir Airlines—had made its way into the ranks of the world’s leading airlines.

Quick facts: Sibir Airlines (S7)

  • Sibir Airlines was closely associated with Novosibirsk and Tolmachevo Airport.
  • The historic name was later linked to the S7 Airlines brand.
  • Past fleet, passenger and route figures apply only to the period in question.
  • The history of mergers and name changes can make old tickets and timetables difficult to interpret.
  • Regardless of the airline, Novosibirsk is a starting point for travel across Siberia.
  • Before booking, confirm the current flight number, operating carrier, baggage allowance and connection details.

Distinguishing the historical Sibir Airlines from S7

Sibir Airlines is a historic name that was later associated with the S7 brand. Its history is useful mainly for understanding older travel accounts, timetables and company information. Fleet size, alliances and past passenger figures should be viewed in their historical context; on their own, they say nothing about current routes, prices or availability.

Anyone planning to fly via Novosibirsk or to other destinations in Siberia should check the current connection, operating carrier, baggage rules and transfer time directly. Depending on the route, rail and air travel may offer different advantages. Reliable planning also means allowing for airport transfers, having the necessary documents, and building in a buffer when destinations are far apart.

The designation S7 may be used differently in older sources than in current travel documents. Before purchasing a ticket, check the operating company’s name, departure airport and the conditions of the fare selected. This is especially important when a longer route through Siberia involves several modes of transport. A change of airport within a major city can also add time and expense, so it should either be ruled out or explicitly factored into connecting travel. For a historical route listing, it is also worth checking whether it refers to a direct flight, a codeshare connection or a former company name. Only current, confirmed flight information is relevant to making a reliable booking today.

From a historic name to the S7 brand

The name Sibir Airlines appears mainly in older timetables and travel documents. Its later association with the S7 brand explains why the company is referred to by different names in various sources. Past fleet sizes, alliances and passenger figures should be attributed to the relevant year, not treated as current figures.

Novosibirsk was an important regional hub. When planning a trip today, Siberia, distances, airport transfers and accommodation should be considered independently of historic airline rankings. Russian airlines can be compared historically, but for a booking, rely on the current information provided by the operator from which the ticket can actually be purchased. Further information about Russian airlines can help with specific preparations.

For an old ticket, read the name, code, flight number, date, departure airport and operating carrier together. Aeroflot, Rossiya and UTair each have their own histories. A codeshare or a change of company name may explain why the name on the ticket differs from the aircraft operator.

For a specific route, check airports in Russia, baggage, connection time, documents and the return journey. Getting there and transport and travel preparation are also part of the planning. A historical route listing is no guarantee that the flight appears in today’s timetable.
