Since 1985, Kazan Airport (IATA: KZN) has been an international airport. The airline "Tatarstan Airlines" is based there. The airport is about 30 kilometers outside the city of Kazan, which has a population of over one million.
The current international airport in Kazan is already the second airport serving the Tatar capital. The decision to build a second airport was made back in 1972, during the Soviet era. At the time, the old Kazan-1 Airport was already too small for the roughly 1.5 million passengers it handled each year. The “new” airport—Kazan-2—opened in 1979. However, the first international flight from Kazan Airport did not depart for Berlin until 1987.
Airport modernization through 2005
It should be noted that Kazan Airport has since been further expanded and renovated. New lighting and weather equipment was installed on the runway. A series of improvements and expansions was completed in 2005 to mark Kazan’s 1,000th anniversary. Key projects included expanding the airport station, modernizing the fuel system, and building a new 3,750-meter runway for Kazan Airport. Airspace monitoring is carried out using a system made by the French company "Thomson". Today, the airport has a new terminal building and comfortable passenger-processing facilities. The new airport building has a total area of about 30,000 m². Kazan Airport can handle around 690 passengers per hour, including 100 in an ultramodern “Business Terminal.”
Airlines across the CIS
The airlines serving Kazan Airport read like a “who’s who” of air travel in the CIS countries: Aeroflot, Bugulma Air Enterprise, Kazan Air Enterprise, Kuban Airlines, Rossiya Airlines, S7 Airlines, Tatarstan Airlines, UTair, and Uzbekistan Airways. Germany’s Lufthansa operates scheduled flights from Kazan to Frankfurt twice a week. Local airlines connect Kazan with Istanbul and cities in Central Asia. There are also charter flights to Thailand, the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, and cities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Its favorable geographical location makes it possible to connect the capital of Tatarstan by air with Russia’s largest cities. The flight from Kazan to Moscow takes 1.5 hours, and the flight to St. Petersburg takes about 3.5 hours. It takes 30 minutes to drive from central Kazan to the airport.

Practical preparations
For a broader perspective, air travel and airport arrivals are a good starting point. A travel checklist, up-to-date information on getting there and local transport, and maps saved for offline use can all help with preparations. Check your documents, addresses, and booking details again before setting off. If you are connecting several stops, do not leave your return journey until the last possible connection. For Kazan Airport, compare accommodation options with the main journeys planned for each day and allow realistic breaks.
Air travel and airport arrivals and travel checklist and schedule and passport and personal documents and transfers and local transport can help you prepare when you consider routes, timing, and current conditions together.
Train travel and stations and maps saved for offline use and a card, cash, and a second payment option and more travel ideas can help you prepare when you consider routes, timing, and current conditions together.
The best travel decision comes from choosing a suitable pace and relying on verifiable information. Compare your specific reason for traveling with the length of the trip, your budget, the routes involved, and the kind of stay you want. If any part of your plans remains uncertain, a shorter leg or a different type of trip may be the more reliable option. For Kazan Airport, consider not only the reason for your visit but also route conditions, weather, daylight, and a safe return.
