St Petersburg’s largest airport, Pulkovo (IATA: LED), is now the main air gateway to Russia’s cultural capital and is the base of Russia’s second-largest airline, the new “Rossiya,” formed through the merger of Pulkovo and Rossiya.

St Petersburg Airport / Pulkovo was originally the base of the major Russian airline Pulkovo, after which it was also named. Following the merger, the St Petersburg city administration was greatly concerned that air traffic and the headquarters of the new company might also be relocated—a concern that, fortunately for the city and Pulkovo Airport, did not come to pass.

Pulkovo Airport is now one of the largest airports in Russia. It serves more than 4 million passengers a year and has two terminals. The first terminal, “Pulkovo 1,” handles flights between St Petersburg and cities in the CIS. International passengers depart from and arrive at the second terminal, “Pulkovo 2.”

A showcase airport: Pulkovo

“Pulkovo 2” also receives the aircraft of the heads of state of France, Germany, the United States and other G8 members when they visit Russia. St Petersburg is often chosen to host state receptions, partly because it is probably Russia’s most European city and is renowned for its architectural and cultural beauty, but also because it is the hometown of Russia’s new “tsar,” Putin.

Expansion of St Petersburg–Pulkovo Airport

Preparations are currently underway at Pulkovo for a comprehensive modernization. The project is estimated to cost 1 billion dollars. The German company Hochtief Airport GmbH developed the airport’s master plan. The project is to be completed by 2025. Among other things, another passenger terminal will be built.

The easiest way to reach the airport in St Petersburg is by metro. From Moskovskaya metro station, take bus 39 or minibus K-39 to Terminal “Pulkovo 1,” and bus 13 or minibus K-13 to Terminal “Pulkovo 2.” You can also take minibus K-213 to Terminal “Pulkovo 2” from Sennaya Ploshchad metro station.

Practical preparation

For geographic context, Air travel and airport arrival is a good starting point. A travel checklist, up-to-date information on getting there and local transport, and maps saved for offline use can all help with preparations. Double-check documents, addresses and booking details before setting out. If your trip includes several stops, don’t plan your return around the very last possible connection. For Pulkovo Airport, consider your accommodation location alongside your main daily journeys and realistic breaks.

Air travel and airport arrival and Travel checklist and schedule and Passport and personal documents and Transfers and local transport support your preparations when routes, timing and current conditions are considered together.

Train travel and railway stations and maps saved for offline use and Map, cash and a second payment option and more holiday ideas support your preparations when routes, timing and current conditions are considered together.

The best travel decision takes into account a suitable pace and information that can be verified. So compare your specific reason for travelling with the duration, budget, routes and type of stay you want. If part of the plan remains uncertain, a shorter leg or a different kind of trip may be the more reliable option. For Pulkovo Airport, consider not only your reason for visiting but also route conditions, weather, daylight and a safe return.
