Himarë between the Ionian Sea, Castle and Mountain Landscape
Himarë is located on the Ionian Sea coast in southern Albania, between rugged mountains and the clear waters of the Ionian Sea. The town therefore combines a distinctive coastal setting with natural and cultural experiences that can be found at various points throughout the town and its surroundings.
Landscape
Himara Beach is located in the center of Himarë and is characterized by sand, small stones and clear water. The beach provides access to tourist infrastructure such as bars, restaurants and various activities. Different coastal impressions are therefore an immediate part of the townscape: on one side are the water and the beach, while on the other are the rugged mountains surrounding Himarë.
Nature
Spile Cave is located on the coast of Himarë. It contains small chambers with rare stalactites and is designated as a natural monument because of its geological value and unique seascape. The area around Himarë is also hilly and mountainous. It offers opportunities for walks in nature and for exploring panoramic landscapes, without this implying any specific route or defined level of difficulty.
The Athaliotissa Monastery, also known as Athali, is a pilgrimage site of the Blessed Virgin in Himarë. The monastery can only be reached on foot and offers panoramic views of Himarë. The combination of the religious site, the walking route and the view over the town is one of the clearly identified natural and cultural reference points in the surrounding area.
Culture
In Himarë, polyphony is part of the local identity and is passed down from generation to generation. Albanian folk iso-polyphony was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. Thus, Himarë reflects both the local transmission of this tradition and its international recognition in cultural history.
Himarë Castle, also known as the Old Castle, is situated on a hill overlooking Himarë and the Ionian Sea. The complex dates back to the Illyrian period and was later developed further by the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. There, you can explore the old walls, church ruins, historic houses and cobbled lanes. Within the castle is the Church of Saint Mary, whose history dates back to the 12th–13th century. It was built in the Byzantine style and preserves old frescoes and traditional iconography.
The Church of Saint Spyridon also stands in the center of Himarë and is an example of classical Orthodox architecture. There, you can admire the detailed architecture, icons and frescoes in the interior. Himarë therefore brings together evidence of various eras and religious traditions, from the Illyrian period through Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman developments to the Orthodox furnishings of the churches.
