Kaninë is a place that cannot be reduced to a single viewpoint. Its distinctive character lies in the connection between built traces, organically developed spaces and the relationship between village and landscape. Thus, the individual buildings are connected to the character of the settlement and its historical context.

Culture

The historic centre of Kaninë preserves significant cultural, historical, urban, architectural and landscape values. It includes Kaninë Castle and the part of the village located to its south. The fortification and village area therefore belong to the same historic settlement structure. Kaninë is also home to two Category I cultural monuments: Banesa e Kujtim Hamzes and Teqeja e Kaninës. Another sight is the Church of Saint Mary, which is connected to Kaninë's spiritual heritage. Thus, alongside the individual monuments, the relationship between the historic centre and the organically developed village fabric also remains visible.

The preserved built heritage includes traditional stone houses. Together with the other historic elements, they represent a settlement character in which different forms of cultural heritage coexist. The narrow cobblestone streets contribute to the historic character of the village and complement the preserved historic elements with a clearly recognisable spatial structure.

History

Kaninë Castle has origins in antiquity and underwent significant construction and fortification phases during the Byzantine and medieval periods. Its history is evident not only in its chronological depth but also in the surviving architectural traces: visitors can explore the surrounding walls and the architectural remains of Kaninë Castle. The various construction and fortification phases remain recognisable as interconnected parts of the complex.

Kaninë Castle offers commanding views over the Bay of Vlora and the surrounding lowlands. Around the historic centre, the protected zone also includes elements intended to provide views of the village. Both visual connections form part of the landscape values associated with the historic area.

Conservation, structural and geological work, as well as measures to improve the visitor experience, continued at Kaninë Castle. Plans for interpretation also continued. The complex therefore represents historical construction phases, preserved architectural remains and ongoing work on its conservation, safeguarding and interpretation.

Local Wine

The Kaninë and Dukat area is known for the production of traditionally made wine, mainly from local grape varieties. Wine production is therefore expressly connected with this area and its regional grape-variety base.
