Zaqatala: Hotels and Accommodations

Zaqatala showcases its landscape particularly clearly on the marked 15.6-kilometer Car–Honzoqor–Qəbizdərə hiking route. It leads through forests and high-altitude pastures and is physically demanding but technically easy, as the paths are clear and fully marked.

Nature

The nearby Zaqatala State Nature Reserve contains forests, subalpine and alpine meadows, and high, bare rock formations at elevations between 650 and 3,646 meters. The protected area is home to more than 1,000 plant species, as well as 32 mammal species and 89 migratory or resident bird species.

History

Beneath the fortress walls on Zaqatala’s central square lie the remains of an Albanian temple dating from the 5th to 6th century. Zaqatala Fortress was built in the 1830s as a Russian military garrison. The preserved fortress complex includes walls, a reservoir, stables, a powder magazine, and cannons. A former Russian church is now used as a cultural club.

Culture

The Zaqatala State Art Gallery, established in 1989, is located within the fortress grounds. Its permanent collection comprises 128 works.
