Svislač: Hotels and accommodations

Culture and history

The Svislač Historical and Regional Studies Museum is located at 8 Lenin Street, 231960, in the Grodno Region. It is housed in a prerevolutionary building dating from the early 20th century.

The Asiłak Memorial Complex was opened on July 16, 1989, to mark the 45th anniversary of the liberation of Svislač. It includes an eleven-metre-high copper figure of a warrior with a lowered sword.

The preserved 19th-century gymnasium building in the Classical style is a documented architectural heritage site of Svislač. Vincent Tyszkiewicz founded the school in 1804; its students included Kastus Kalinouski, Napoleon Orda, Jozef Kraszewski, and Romuald Traugutt. The preserved former building of the Svislač gymnasium is an architectural monument: the rectangular, single-storey building has a gabled roof; the western gable façade is designed with a Doric colonnade and an attic feature, while two entrances on the side façade terminate in porticoes, each with two square columns.

In the centre of Svislač stands a bust of Kastus Kalinouski, created by the sculptor Zair Azgur. In a park avenue near the bust stands a monument to the uprising leader Romuald Traugutt, who was a graduate of the Svislač gymnasium. The former synagogue building of Svislač is described as one of the few buildings in the town to have survived the wartime hostilities.

Nature and surroundings

Part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park lies in Svislač District. In 1992, the national park became the first area in the territory of the former USSR to be added to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.

Excursions

The “Svislach Tyszkievichava” bus excursion runs from Svislač to Zharkovshchina and back and is 45 kilometres long. The “Svislachchina: From the Past to the Present” bus excursion begins and ends in Svislač and includes, among other stops, the Asiłak Memorial Complex and the Yazvinskaya Dubrava ecological educational trail.
