History and culture

The Historical and Local History Museum of Novogrudok presents the history and culture of the city and region from the 10th century to the mid-20th century in nine exhibition halls. It offers museum events, themed guided tours, and lectures. Its collection comprises approximately 22,000 museum objects in 14 collections.

The Adam Mickiewicz House Museum has been included in the list of the historical and cultural heritage of the Republic of Belarus. At the same time, it is an open-air museum in a restored manor estate from the early 19th century, with a residential building, outbuilding, barn, well, and pavilion. The Museum of Jewish Resistance in Novogrudok was established in 2007 at the site of a former ghetto and documents the escape through a tunnel built by prisoners, as well as the history of the Bielski Jewish partisan unit. The exhibition “Jewish Resistance in Novogrudok during the Holocaust” was opened in 2007 at the site of the former Jewish ghetto and is dedicated to the resistance of the Jews of Novogrudok and the surrounding area.

The ruins of Novogrudok Castle are considered the oldest center of the city and the former residence of Russian princes and the princes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Novogrudok Castle was built in three construction phases from the 13th to the 16th century and had seven towers, a palace, and a castle church.

The active parish church of Novogrudok was built from 1712 to 1723. In 1422, the Polish King Jagiello and Sophia of Halshany were married there; Adam Mickiewicz was baptized in this church. The active Church of Boris and Gleb was built in 1519 on the site of a 12th-century church and is an architectural monument with Gothic and Renaissance elements. The active Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1780 as a church of the Franciscan Order and was converted into an Orthodox church in 1846.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was founded in 1624 as a Dominican church and acquired its present appearance at the beginning of the 18th century. It is open to worshippers and tourists. Adam Mickiewicz Hill was built up on the initiative of the Mickiewicz Committee between 1924 and 1931; it contains soil from the countries where the poet lived. The art gallery in the center of Novogrudok was built in 2012 and has two large exhibition halls and an artists’ workshop.

Landscape and distances

Novogrudok and most of the district of the same name lie on the Novogrudok glacial marginal moraine upland, the highest part of the Grodno Region. Novogrudok is described as the highest-elevation city in Belarus. Over a distance of 22 kilometers between the highest point of Castle Hill and the level of the Neman, the city has an elevation difference of 250 meters.

Novogrudok is located 22 kilometers from Nowojelnja railway station, as well as 150 kilometers from Minsk and 162 kilometers from Grodno.

Routes and activities

The signposted “King Mindaug” cycling loop is 2 kilometers long and leads from the tourist information center via the city park and the parish church back to Lenin Square in Novogrudok. The signposted “Heart of Grazhina” cycling loop is 15 kilometers long and begins at the tourist information center in Novogrudok.

The guided adventure excursion “In the Footsteps of Adam Mickiewicz” begins in Novogrudok and includes a 120-kilometer route through Novogrudok, Lake Svityaz, Shchorsy, Lyubcha, and Lake Litovka. The program includes the Adam Mickiewicz House Museum, poetry and music from Mickiewicz’s era, an optional workshop for making a traditional souvenir, and a picnic at Lake Svityaz.
