History

Velika Kladuša, also known as Cladussa, was fortified during frequent Ottoman incursions into the region. In 1633, the Ottoman authorities repaired the fortress of Kladuša and stationed a permanent garrison there. This garrison was subordinate to the captain of Ostrožac. The architectural form of the center also points to its fortified past: Velika Kladuša was surrounded by a high, sturdy, round defensive wall, which included a round tower on the side facing the foreland.

The Stari grad–Velika Kladuša complex was handed over to the Municipality of Velika Kladuša for administration and use in order to protect it from further deterioration and preserve it. Thus, alongside the historic fortification, the present-day treatment of this complex is also connected with the town’s history.

Events

Kladuško ljeto is one of the most important annual events in Velika Kladuša. The Kladuško ljeto 2026 program was scheduled to run from July 18 to August 9, 2026. As part of this program, a folklore showcase and the Krajiška sofra took place at Trg mladih in Velika Kladuša. The Krajiška sofra is part of the Kladuško ljeto event.

The JU Centar za kulturu in Velika Kladuša organizes cultural events. Its program also includes the traditional cultural and artistic event program Kladuški dani kulture.

Religious Buildings

Several buildings in Velika Kladuša have the status of a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Džamija Zagrad is located in the Zagrad settlement below Stari grad in Velika Kladuša and is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Church of the Holy Great Martyr George in Velika Kladuša is also a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Gradska džamija is a defining feature of the area around the main square of Velika Kladuša. Gradska džamija, together with its harem, is also a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thus, different religious buildings and their specific connections to the townscape are among the visible components of Velika Kladuša.

Nature

The Stari grad–Velika Kladuša promenade runs almost entirely through the forest and is suitable for walking and cycling a few hundred meters from the town center. The Grljevac hiking trail is 5 km long; mountain streams flow along its route, forming small waterfalls. The two paths are therefore clearly distinguished by their different landscape features and their respective stated uses.
