Popovi – Culture, History and Hotels

The Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ in Popovi was built between 1991 and 1993. Popovi is also home to the first village public bathhouse in Bosnia and Herzegovina; the Popovi public bathhouse opened in 1924. The village is also home to one of the oldest reading rooms in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A bust of a prince stands in the center of Popovi. The black mulberry tree at the highest point of Popovi is considered the oldest tree in Semberija.

Popovi is first mentioned in 1548 in an Ottoman tax register. The 1548 entry refers to the settlement as Zvonaš Selište. A register from 1600 lists Popovi under the name Prokac Bijeljina. The history of the black mulberry tree also includes an oral tradition: according to it, Prince Ivo tied his horse to the black mulberry tree in the center of Popovi, at the highest point of the village.

Traditional horse races are held in Popovi during Poklade. The riding school at Ranch Tanasić in Popovi offers lessons for beginners as well as opportunities for extreme riding. Thus, traditional events and riding activities exist alongside one another without being attributed to the same occasion or location.

The Stanišići Ethno Village includes two authentic water mills from 1937 and 1917 that are still in use. At the ethno village, beside a lake and next to the monk’s house, there is a stone amphitheater with 380 seats for open-air cultural events. The water mills at the Stanišići Ethno Village continue to grind flour for the flatbreads served in the restaurant.
