Discover Ugljevik: Nature, Culture and History

Šuplja Stijena is a geomorphological rock opening, approximately 20 metres long and up to three metres high. The site is frequently visited by nature lovers, hikers and mountaineers.

Nature

Borova Šuma is located not far from the centre of Ugljevik. Borova Šuma has numerous marked hiking trails suitable for walkers and cyclists; it is also suitable for sports and recreational tourism. Signposts and tourist information boards have been installed on the Kose Trail above Ugljevik. Fishing takes place at Lake Mezgraja in the municipality of Ugljevik.

Culture

The “Filip Višnjić” Cultural Centre houses an ethnographic local-history collection with 220 traditional objects. At the same time, it is a replica of the old building of the “Ugljevik” mine in Stari Ugljevik. The cultural centre hosts concerts, theatre performances, literary evenings and academies.

The famous “Ćiro” steam locomotive operated on the Mezgraja–Ugljevik–Bijeljina route, carrying passengers and coal. It is a popular photo opportunity in the square in front of the “Filip Višnjić” Cultural Centre in Ugljevik. The “Rudar” Sports and Recreation Centre manages swimming pools and a sports hall. The “Ugljevik 2026” art colony was opened in 2026 for its twelfth edition.

Local Life

The plum, fruit brandy and honey fair traditionally takes place every year at the end of August or the beginning of September. At the fair, visitors can experience the exhibitors’ local offerings as well as an extensive cultural and artistic programme.

History

The surroundings of Ugljevik include Jablan grad, a medieval fortress, and the Hajduk Novak Cave in Krćina. Jablan grad Fortress was built in the Middle Ages; today, only sparse traces of the former town and its life remain there.

The Monastery of Saint Alexander Nevsky is the only place of worship in Bosnia and Herzegovina built by Russians; it was under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate.
