Garmen at a glance

The municipality encompasses parts of the Mesta Valley and the western slopes of the Dabrash section of the Western Rhodopes. Ognyanovo is a balneological centre; its hyperthermal mineral water has a temperature of 40 °C. Kovachevitsa is home to an architectural reserve and several natural attractions. The Kaninska eco-trail offers hiking options lasting from two to ten hours.

Which natural attractions define Garmen?

The Tämnata Gora Nature Reserve protects ancient fir, beech and spruce forests in the Dabrash section of the Western Rhodopes. It is located in the territory of Kovachevitsa, in Garmen Municipality. Kozijat Kamak has a different natural character: this protected natural landmark is a unique rock formation covering about 300 m² in the area of Kovachevitsa. It offers a panorama of the Kayaliyski Rocks and the distant peaks of Pirin to the west. The area attracts researchers and tourists.

The Zagrade plane trees near Garmen are over 600 years old and have been protected since 1968. Siniya Vir, a cascade of waterfalls with blue-green pools, lies in the valley of the Kanina River. From Kovachevitsa, the waterfall can be reached by a one-hour walk westward.

What can you discover in Kovachevitsa?

Kovachevitsa is the only architectural reserve in Garmen Municipality. The ensemble includes the Church of St. Nicholas, a monastery school, a secular school, 112 residential buildings and five farm buildings. Historical architecture and a specific collection of buildings are therefore central to the character of the village.

The Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1847; in 1900 it received a four-storey bell tower.

Another geological feature is Rizova Dupka, a karst gorge 10 to 12 metres deep. Vertical wooden ladders lead to a corridor there that is 15 metres long and two metres wide.

What hiking and thermal-water experiences are available?

The Kaninska eco-trail offers hiking options lasting from two to ten hours. As a long circular route, it runs from Kovachevitsa via Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo, and back to Kovachevitsa. The duration refers to the hiking options offered; no specific time is given here for the circular route itself.

Mountain hikes are offered in Leshten. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the hiking options on the Kaninska eco-trail and the mountain hikes in Leshten, without treating them as a single route.

For thermal waters, Ognyanovo is the main location. The thermal-water area includes seven natural springs and two additional drilled wells.
