Kovachevitsa: Hotels and Accommodation

Kovachevitsa was established after 1656 in the course of population movements associated with attempts to convert the Bulgarian population in the Rhodopes. During the Bulgarian National Revival in the 18th and 19th centuries, the village was an educational center. In 1977, Kovachevitsa was declared a historical and architectural reserve.

The Kovachevitsa house is a southern Bulgarian subtype of the Rhodope house and consists of two to four floors. The typical houses in the village were built in the 18th century, have two or three floors, and feature projecting upper floors. The architectural reserve includes the Church of St. Nicholas, a monastic cell school, a secular school, 112 residential buildings, and five outbuildings. Six houses display characteristics of cultural monuments of national importance: Daskalova, Shungureva, Dishlyanova, Shimerovi, Bangova, and Pilareva.

The Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1847; a four-story bell tower was added in 1900.

Narrow cobblestone streets run through Kovachevitsa. Year-round walks with a thematic presentation are offered in the historical and cultural reserve, along with the opportunity to visit art galleries. Hiking trails begin in Kovachevitsa and lead to Siniya Vir Waterfall.

The chamber music festival “Off the Beaten Path” is also scheduled to take place in 2026 at the Svetlina Community Center in Kovachevitsa. The festival includes new music, commissioned works, and world premieres.

The Kaninska Eco Trail is 13 kilometers long and passes through forested and rocky terrain. The hiking routes there take between two and ten hours. The main circular route runs from Kovachevitsa via Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo and back to Kovachevitsa.

One section connects Skrebatno with Kovachevitsa via the first bridge over the Kanina River. Another section leads from Kovachevitsa through the underground corridor Rizzova Dupka to Gorno Dryanovo. The Kaninska Eco Trail passes through rocky, forested, and river-shaped habitats and is associated with rare plant and animal species.

More than 500 meters from Kovachevitsa, on the road to Siniya Vir, there is a bivouac site with shelter, tables, benches, and fire pits, as well as spaces for picnics or tents.

The Tumnata Gora Nature Reserve is located 16 kilometers from Kovachevitsa at an altitude of 1,400 to 1,600 meters in the upper reaches of the Kanina River. Kozi Kamak is a rock sanctuary complex 14 kilometers northeast of Kovachevitsa. Leshten is 8 kilometers from Kovachevitsa and is another rural tourism destination.

Traditional Bulgarian dishes can be sampled in Kovachevitsa.
