Beram: Hotels and Accommodation

Beram lies on a conical hill above a fertile valley; this setting provided space for a fortified settlement.

History

A settlement already existed in Beram during the Iron Age. Beram preserves a radial street network connected to its ancient fortified settlement. The settlement developed over earlier Roman fortifications and medieval castles, and the historic entrances are still called Vela vrata and Mala vrata. Roman fortifications and medieval castles were later built on the ruins of Beram’s earlier fortifications.

The medieval settlement of Beram was surrounded by walls with a square defensive tower; parts of the walls are still preserved today.

Culture

The sanctuary of St. Martin’s Church in Beram dates from 1431. The sanctuary of St. Martin’s Church in Beram contains wall paintings by two 15th-century masters. St. Martin’s Church in Beram also houses a stone relief of Saint Martin and the Beggar, protected as a movable cultural monument.

The cemetery church of St. Mary of the Rocks is located one kilometre northeast of Beram. The interior walls of the church of St. Mary of the Rocks, located near Beram, are almost completely covered with well-preserved Late Gothic frescoes by the master Vincent of Kastav. The fresco Dance of the Dead shows kings, merchants, cardinals and the pope dancing hand in hand with Death.

The Vladimir Gortan Monument in Beram dates from 1953, has the form of a sarcophagus-shaped stećak and was created jointly by architects Zdenko Kolacio and Zdenko Sila.

Nature

The Pazin–Beram–Pazin 711 hiking trail leads from Pazin via Gortanov brijeg to Beram and returns to Pazin via the Santarija plateau and the Pazinski krov waterfall. The Pazin–Beram–Pazin 711 hiking trail runs mostly in the shade.
