History

The Rijeka–Šapjane–Ilirska Bistrica railway line is designated as a railway line of national importance. The Pivka–Rijeka branch line was built in 1873; Šapjane was one of its stations.

Events

The Gradina Šapjane festival program began with a votive mass and continued with a raffle, games, local music, food, and drinks. The festival had historical and votive significance for the local population and had been held since 1946; its 69th edition took place in 2015.

Cycling

Šapjane was one of the stops on interpretive e-bike rides through the hinterland of Matulji. Interpretive cycling tours that reached Šapjane passed through protected landscapes and visited military and ancient fortifications connected with the wider regional surroundings of the Matulji hinterland.

Matulji offers guided Bike-&-Taste cycling experiences that combine natural scenery, cultural heritage, and local specialties; the program includes routes through the municipality’s smallest villages and along old roads.
