Veli Brgud: Hotels and Accommodation

Veli Brgud is a rural cultural heritage ensemble with probably medieval origins. Historically, the settlement was associated with livestock grazing, forestry, agriculture, and viticulture. The built heritage includes older stone farm buildings and houses, ranging from simple medieval single-storey forms to more complex examples from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Culture

The Brgujski zvončari and mačkare association was founded in 1998 to preserve the local bell-ringer and masquerade traditions. The Brgujski zvončari were recognized in 2009 as representatives of the intangible world cultural heritage. The language of Veli Brgud also belongs to the Munski dialect group within the Čakavian dialect area.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been protected as a cultural asset since 2005 and is listed among the protected cultural assets of Veli Brgud. The small Church of Saint Nicholas, built in the late Gothic tradition and dated to the 16th century, is the oldest surviving building in Veli Brgud. It was first mentioned in written records in 1666.

Before Easter, the Church of Saint Nicholas was historically a pilgrimage destination for people from Kastav; one of three processions made its way to Brgud. A small replica of a lime kiln called Japlenica was built in Štambulija in 2017 and can be seen when visiting Veli Brgud. The carnival procession of the Brgujski zvončari and maškare passes through the surrounding settlements on the penultimate Sunday of Carnival. It consists of three groups: adult bell-ringers, child bell-ringers, and masked performers.

Trails and Landscape

Tourist Association cycling route 118, named “Saka noć ima svoju moć,” passes through Veli Brgud. Veli Brgud also has a water fountain provided by Matulji Aqua Oasis for hikers, cyclists, and passers-by.

The Do Studenca hiking trail is 1,800 metres long and leads to Studenac in approximately 30 minutes of easy walking; the trail is also suitable for cycling. Studenac is a large pond enclosed by a wall beside a small water spring.

The Veli Brgud–Šapjane hiking route is 3,800 metres long, rated moderate to difficult, and suitable for cycling. The Veli Brgud–Male Mune–Veli Brgud road cycling route is 32 kilometres long.

Cuisine

Brgujski kapuz is a distinctive purple cabbage with a strong, peppery flavour.
