Getting There

The road leading through Gornji Zagon was fully paved in 2019; from Bater, the route continues through the historic coastal hamlets of Krasnica, Kal, Trbotinj, Valač, and Plužnica. The regional road ŽC5093 connects Gornji Zagon with Donji Zagon, while the county road ŽC5219 connects Bribir with Gornji Zagon.

The Rijeka–Bater section of EuroVelo 8 is 55 kilometers long and runs entirely over asphalt or macadam. Accommodation facilities are available in Gornji Zagon along this section.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Anthony in Gornji Zagon is listed as a historic building. In the hamlet of Plužnica within Gornji Zagon stands the newly built Chapel of Saint Anthony. It was built in 2020/2021 by descendants of the residents of Gornji Zagon; it was created as a legacy for future generations and dedicated to the saint revered by the ancestors of the residents of Gornji Zagon.

The shared historical name Gornje Zagonje refers to the settlements of Krasnica, Kal, Trbotinj, Valač, and Plužnice. According to oral tradition, the founding of these five settlements can be traced back to 18 families. During the Second World War, the area of Gornji Zagon was designated as the center of a free partisan territory.

The Zavičajna udruga Plužnice is working on the restoration, cleaning, landscaping, and improvement of the five hamlets that make up Gornji Zagon. The villages of Gornji Zagon were settled in the 17th century and abandoned during the 1970s.
