Culture and History

The Frankopan Castle stands in the old town and was built in the 13th century during the rule of the Dukes of Krk. The Vinodol Statute was written in Croatian and in the Glagolitic script at this castle on 6 January 1288. The compact stone houses and narrow streets of the old town lead to the parish church of St Philip and St James.

The National Museum and the Novi Vinodolski Gallery opened to visitors in 1951 and have been located in the Frankopan Castle and the Turnac Tower since 1973. The permanent exhibition includes archaeological, underwater archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic, historical, sacred and art collections.

The “Fishermen’s Stories” educational trail in Novi Vinodolski combines nature, culture and fishing traditions; information panels provide details about local fishing history and marine conservation. Novljanski Mesopust was designated an intangible cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia in 2011. The customs extend from the Thursday three weeks before Ash Wednesday until Ash Wednesday and include events, dances, and specially prepared food and drinks.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross was built on a hill and offers views over Novi Vinodolski. The Church of the Holy Trinity is a well-preserved Gothic church in the old town.

Coast and Island

The central Lišanj Beach offers water and sand sports, tennis courts, a children’s playground, catering facilities, sun lounger and parasol rental, and a diving centre.

The island of San Marino lies 205 metres off the coast of Novi Vinodolski. It has walking paths and eight benches marked with the names of local winds. The Church of Saint Marin on the island of San Marino dates from the Gothic period.

Wine and Regional Tradition

Pavlomir Winery has a cellar and a tasting room in the heart of its vineyard, which visitors can use for wine experiences. Pavlomir offers tastings of Žlahtina, other wines from the winery, and the 1288 and San Marino sparkling wines.
