The history of Dymokury ranges from a medieval fortress to a Baroque chateau and also leads into a landscape shaped by ponds. Historic buildings, an educational trail, and specific routes through the countryside create a varied picture of the town.
Culture and History
Between 1615 and 1618, Dymokury Castle was rebuilt from a medieval fortress into a Renaissance chateau. The present-day Dymokury Chateau, with its extensive courtyard, was built in the second half of the 17th century and is a three-winged, single-storey Baroque building.
Sacred Architecture
The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was built between 1723 and 1725, probably based on a design by J. Santini. The Baroque central-plan building has an oval floor plan on the outside and an octagonal one inside. The church also contains a bronze baptismal font dating from 1605.
On Kalvárie Hill southwest of Dymokury, in the direction of Vestec, stands a stone cross dating from 1866.
Water and Nature
The Návesní pond in Dymokury belongs to the Štítarský potok 2 fishing area, bearing the identification number 411114. The Pustý rybník pond is located nearby and is part of the Rožďalovické rybníky Bird Protection Area.
Educational Trail and Excursion
The Naučná přírodovědecká stezka Pustý rybník is a 2 km-long educational trail with seven stops focusing on the flora, fauna, and geology of the area surrounding the pond system. It begins at the dam of Pustý rybník on the road between Poděbrady and Jičín, approximately 1 km from Dymokury railway station, and ends at the dam of Jakubský rybník.
The excursion “Za památkami, drážkou a pověstmi do Dymokur” can be completed with a pushchair and by bicycle; off-road tires are required because of the meadow paths. The excursion is available for all visitors to download free of charge.
