The Žiželice Museum is located on the ground floor of the historic town hall, which Martin Sobota, a master mason from Žiželice, built after the great fire of Žiželice in 1800. It features a permanent local history exhibition on the history of the town, linked to the history of Hradišťský hrad Castle. The castle stood on a spur above the Cidlina River in Hradišťko. The ethnographic exhibition documents the heyday of crafts and guilds through guild banners, seals, journeymen’s and guild certificates, and facsimiles of guild books.

Culture

The first written record of the Žiželice area dates from 1052; at that time, there was already a wooden church and a market centre serving the wider surrounding area. In 1437, a stone church was built in Žiželice to its original dimensions, a substantial part of whose masonry has survived to this day. The town’s architectural history also includes the road bridge over the Cidlina River. It is a reinforced-concrete structure dating from 1923, with two reinforced-concrete girder spans and a total bridging length of 40.9 metres.

Geographical Location

Žiželice lies on the Cidlina River in a flat and gently hilly landscape.

Nature

The Žehuňský rybník–Obora Kněžičky Bird Protection Area includes extensive reed beds and wet meadows around Žehuňský rybník, an area consisting predominantly of oak-hornbeam woodland in Žehuňská obora, and the small Kopičácký rybník pond. Žehuňský rybník was created on the Cidlina River in 1492, and Žehuňská obora was established in 1840. The Bird Protection Area also extends into the Zbraň district of Žiželice and into intensively farmed agricultural land to the southwest.
