Veletov: Hotels and Accommodation
Veletov combines sacred architectural heritage, rural architecture, and traces of its milling and shipping history. A prominent example is the Church of the Annunciation: the neo-Gothic church was built in 1895 and ceremonially consecrated on 11 July 1897. It preserves a unified interior dating from the late 19th century, original wall paintings, and stained-glass windows. A particularly noteworthy choir window depicts the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.
Culture and History
The historic buildings include several farmsteads. The late Baroque gate of Farmstead No. 24 dates from 1824 and is registered as an immovable cultural monument. Farmstead No. 7 has a brick-built gate with a wicket gate dating from the first third of the 19th century; both the gate and the wicket gate are registered as immovable cultural monuments. No. 37 is a completely preserved Polabian farmstead from 1830 to 1840 and was restored in accordance with conservation requirements in 2015–2016.
The Naval Museum in Veletov is dedicated to the history of Czechoslovak maritime shipping. Another historical connection is provided by the mill known as Veletovský mlýn, which was first mentioned in 1309. At that time, its owner, Milota of Choltice, sold it together with other estates and services to Sedlec Monastery.
In the centre of Veletov, next to the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, stands a cast-iron cross on a pedestal made of limestone from Kutná Hora. It was erected in 1882 and restored in 2013.
Nature and Water
The mill known as Veletovský mlýn operated a small hydropower plant from 1984 to 1986. A 750-metre-long millrace leads to it; an approximately 1,300-metre-long tailrace meanders around Veletov and flows back into the Elbe.
A regionally significant cycle route runs through the Veletov area along the Elbe. It forms part of the basic Czech cycle-route network and is heavily used. Lžovické tůně is part of the Elbe floodplain, a particularly well-preserved, harmonious section with a high proportion of spatially and age-diverse hardwood floodplain forests. Exemplary plant and animal communities are developing in numerous oxbow lakes.
