Culture and History

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is a protected cultural monument in the cadastral area of Janov. The original settlement of Janov, called Janův důl, was founded between 1771 and 1779 as a settlement for workers on the surrounding estates.

The roadside chapel of the Virgin Mary features an elaborately designed late Baroque gable above its façade. The memorial to those who fell in Janov bears the names of seven fallen soldiers, stands in the village square, and was unveiled in 1937.

Local Life

The MaDiS amateur theater in Janov has rehearsed twenty-one plays and stages its performances in the hall at the local inn. According to local tradition, the ghost Briknherr appeared in the forests around Janov and near the Ewigu Pond (Evíku) between Janov and Deštnice.

Routes

The railway line from Rakovník via Louny to Most crosses the territory of the municipality of Janov. Janov's local pond was lost when the railway line from Rakovník to Louny opened in 1904. Marked cycling route no. 8167 passes through Janov.

Local Profile

A workout playground has been opened in Janov, offering a wide range of exercise elements for all age groups. In the former Žatec District, Janov was the only Czech municipality with 2,835 kopas of hop gardens.
