Jílové U Prahy: Hotels and Accommodation
At the Regional Museum in Jílové u Prahy, the exhibition “Step by Step Through the History of Gold” traces the history of gold, from Celtic gold panning to medieval deep mining. It includes a walk-through replica mining tunnel and uses augmented reality to animate mining machinery.
Culture
The gold mines of Jílové are considered the most historically significant source of gold in the Bohemian lands and offer the Czech Republic’s first underground via ferrata. Its route passes through mining chambers dating from the reign of Charles IV. The adventure ends with a descent via ladders and stairs through historic mine workings before the route returns to the Václav adit. There is also an underground railway at the gold mines leading to the Pepř shaft.
In the vicinity of Jílové u Prahy, Štola sv. Josefa is one of the oldest mining sites in the Czech Republic accessible to the public. It has 280 m of tunnels and galleries known to date and is a National Cultural Monument. Also nearby is Štola Halíře, an exploratory adit from the mid-20th century with a unique diamond-shaped profile. The site is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility; visitors can try gold panning there.
The visitor route through Štola sv. Antonína Paduánského runs across two levels connected by seven ladders in an original narrow shaft. The adit is located in the Studené district of Jílové u Prahy, near the Žampach Viaduct. A stone statue of Saint Anthony of Padua stands at the entrance portal.
Townscape and Architecture
The historic centre of Jílové u Prahy was declared an urban conservation area by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic in 1992. Kostel sv. Vojtěcha is an Early Gothic church; its complex includes a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a terrace wall and an access staircase.
Kostel Božího těla is a cemetery church on a hill west of Jílové u Prahy. Near the church is a tombstone dating from 1847 belonging to Ida Václavíčková, the oldest surviving tombstone at the site. The Žampach railway bridge spans a deeply cut valley on seven stone semicircular arches.
Nature and Trails
Rozhledna Pepř is a public observation platform on a telecommunications tower on the 449 m-high Pepř hill, about 1 km south of Jílové u Prahy. The platform is 18 m above the ground and can be reached via 91 steps. Jílové u Prahy is the starting point for several hiking and cycling trails with attractive viewpoints, including Rozhledna Pepř.
