History and Culture

The Benedictine monastery has stood in Svatý Jan pod Skalou for almost 1,000 years. The Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist is an early Baroque building erected in 1661 by the architect C. Lurago.

The Svatojánské Museum is housed in a historic former municipal school building from 1822. It features a permanent exhibition on the history of the municipality and preserves a 19th-century embroidery collection belonging to the local Berger noble family.

The Cave of St. Ivan is accessible from the church and is located in an original karst travertine cave in the rock; it is dominated by the portal of a former Renaissance Church of the Virgin Mary.

Nature and Trails

The Svatojánský Circuit educational trail is a 4 km circular route with 11 stops. It begins at the monastery in Svatý Jan pod Skalou and leads via a steep climb to the “U kříže” viewpoint on Skála.

In the nearby surroundings, the Svatojánský Circuit leads to the Solvay Quarries open-air museum. The attractions there include a limestone-mining museum, a ride on a narrow-gauge railway, and a visit to a mine tunnel.

The trail passes through the karst canyon of the Kačák (Loděnice) stream and reaches the limestone formation known as “kozí hřbety.” The Cesta Vojty Náprstka hiking trail reaches the pilgrimage site of Svatý Jan pod Skalou after the first ascent.

A powerful karst healing spring rises beneath the rock near the Cave of St. Ivan.

The village has an information centre for the Český kras Protected Landscape Area, which helps visitors find their way around the municipality and its immediate surroundings.
