Culture and History

In the centre of Skřipel, St. Simon and Jude’s Church stands by the road. It is a small late Baroque building. Before 1232, Ostrov Monastery held the right of patronage over the church in Skřipel.

In the cadastral area of Skřipel, southeast of the village at the U Šancí site, lies Šance, an important archaeological site. It consists of square earthwork enclosures covering an area of 105 × 125 metres; the interior is approximately 1 metre higher than the surrounding terrain. Its interpretation remains uncertain: Šance may have been a Celtic sanctuary or a fortification from a historical period.

Another archaeological point of interest is Skřipel 5, an area classified as ÚAN I, located 500 metres southwest of the village on the right bank of the Šiberna. It is connected with the prehistoric history of agriculture and contains confirmed or well-founded suspected archaeological finds.

Nature

The Skřipel Alley is designated as a protected tree avenue; it was first designated on 1 January 1987. It runs westward from Osov Chateau towards Skřipel and is planted exclusively with horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum).

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Podbrdský Čtyřlístek consists of four colour-marked circular hiking trails. They pass through Skřipel and the surrounding villages of Lážovice, Vižina and Velký Chlumec and meet in the centre of Osov. The individual routes are 6–8 km long and are intended primarily for hikers; they can also be ridden on trekking bikes or, preferably, mountain bikes.

The cycling route “Ride in Search of the Legendary Horymír” follows the protected chestnut avenue to Skřipel, passes through the village and then returns to Hostomice railway station via Road II/115.
