Vrbice: Hotels and Accommodations

In the center of Vrbice, the complex of St. Gallus Church stands on a raised spur of land. It consists of an enclosing wall with an entrance gate, a bell tower, and the church; the single-nave Baroque building was created in 1733–1734 by remodeling an older Gothic church.

Culture

At the eastern end of the cemetery, a fragment of the ground floor of the original bell tower has been preserved. The upper structure, which survives only as a relic, held two bells.

Northwest of St. Gallus Church, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands at the center of an intersection of three roads. Its square ground plan consists of four pillars connected by semicircular arches; it is topped by a low pyramid roof covered with tiles. The chapel is designated as a protected structure.

Mass is held every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in even-numbered calendar weeks at St. Gallus Parish Church in Vrbice.

History

A church in Vrbice is documented as early as 1305. In a village fire on September 11, 1887, 14 buildings, including all farm buildings, burned down; the old church was also destroyed. The new parish church in Vrbice was solemnly consecrated in 1893 by Bishop Jan Nepomuk Brynych.

Near Opočnice are the site of a hillfort and the location of the abandoned village of Bolice, less than 2 km north-northeast of Opočnice on the road to Městec Králové; approximately 500 m beyond the buildings of the agricultural cooperative, a farm track branches off to the east.

Nature

The Vinný vrch natural monument was first designated on April 1, 1974. The protected area preserves thermophilous plant communities containing the plant species St. Bernard's lily.
