Poušť lies on the shore of Jakubský rybník and is surrounded by forests. Jakubský rybník is the largest surviving pond in the Dymokury pond system. It was named after the former St. James Church in the Poušť settlement.
Nature
The reed meander of Jakubský rybník is a nesting site for many waterbirds. In the surrounding area, a forest clearing offers a view across the entire Pustý rybník, from one dam to the other. A path also runs there through an avenue of old lime trees, which has been designated a state nature monument.
Trails
A blue-marked tourist trail leads from the reed meander of Jakubský rybník to the Poušť settlement. In the surrounding area, an educational trail runs around Pustý rybník, and the blue route continues from there to Komárovský rybník. An alternative hiking route circles Jakubský rybník along the opposite shore and reaches Činěves railway station.
East of Jakubský rybník, beyond a small railway bridge, there is a forest spring in the surrounding area. An approximately 15-kilometre circular route leads from Městec Králové along the blue-marked trail towards Poušť and back to the starting point in Městec Králové via Záhornice and Vinice.
History and Folklore
According to local legend, a hermit and his companions remained on an island to care for a small church; this island is associated with the present-day Poušť settlement. According to another local legend, the hermit cared for a chapel on an island in Jakubský rybník and rang a small bell there.
The Záhorská fortress once stood at the archaeological site on Vondrák. An unmarked route of the former sugar-factory railway leads to this site. The surviving older ground-floor section of Jakubský mlýn was declared a cultural monument in 2007; the mill is one of the few remaining timber-block mills in the Polabí region. Záhornice and the Poušť settlement also share a war memorial.
