In the center of Starý Bydžov stands the Kostel sv. Prokopa church at a crossroads leading toward Stará Skřeněř, Nový Bydžov, Hlušice, and Křičov.
Culture and history
The Kostel sv. Prokopa church was originally a Romanesque building dating from around 1200. Eight 16th-century tombstones have also been preserved at the church.
Jan Malát is also connected with Starý Bydžov: he was born here on June 16, 1843. A monument commemorates him in the village square; it consists of three sandstone blocks with a memorial plaque.
Another historical reference is the hoard of the Únětice culture from Starý Bydžov. It was discovered in 1893 during drainage work in the northwestern part of the cadastral area. The find comprises eight disc-shaped earrings and is considered the largest ensemble of this type of jewelry found in the Czech Republic.
Nature
A notable natural landmark is the Jasan u Starého Bydžova ash tree. Its trunk circumference is 660 centimeters; it is described as one of the five largest ash trees in the Czech Republic. The tree grows southeast of Starý Bydžov, to the left of the road to Nový Bydžov.
