Hradec Králové District combines important cultural sites with extensive woodland landscapes and clearly marked walking and educational trails. The area presents a diverse picture shaped by castle history, archaeology, regional architecture and natural monuments.

Culture and History

Hrádek u Nechanic was built between 1839 and 1857 as a representative summer residence for the Harrach family and designed in the Tudor Gothic style. The castle exhibition presents aristocratic life in the second half of the 19th century through original historical furnishings.

Třebechovice is home to the Třebechovický Proboštův betlém, with more than 2,000 carved wooden pieces. It is the only nativity scene in the Czech Republic to have been declared a national cultural monument. The building of the Museum of East Bohemia also holds this status: it has been protected as a national cultural monument since 1995.

The Všestary Archaeopark is the sixth stop on an archaeological cycling route. Its open-air museum contains reconstructions of buildings from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. One exhibition focuses on the production and use of polished stone axes in the later Stone Age; the Archaeopark also includes a cave with paintings.

Nature and Trails

The municipal forests of Hradec Králové cover 3,771 hectares. Scots pine accounts for 67 percent of the forest. The Funkce lesa educational trail passes through the Černá stráň natural monument. The Les Chlum educational trail has ten information panels and ten stops and introduces rare and protected plant species.

In the municipal forests of Hradec Králové, the blue wheelchair-accessible route begins at the terminus of bus 9 near Lesní hřbitov. The Vodnická stezka also starts there, an easy route of approximately 2 kilometres. The Stezka siluet is about half a kilometre long and is equipped with nine silhouette panels.

The park at Hrádek u Nechanic covers approximately 18 hectares and consists of broad meadows, mature groups of trees and embedded woodland sections. A circular route through the park offers views of the castle on a gentle rise. The park was established in 1844.
