Holovousy Chateau originated from a fortress first mentioned in writing in 1433 and converted into a Renaissance chateau around 1594.
Culture and History
A Slavic hillfort in the chateau park of Holovousy dates from the first half of the 9th century and is listed in the state register of immovable cultural monuments.
The Church of Saint Bartholomew stands in Chodovice. It is a single-nave building with a pentagonal presbytery and a massive prismatic tower topped by an onion dome with a lantern and onion finial.
The date “Anno 1756” is inscribed at the entrance to the church. The tombstones of Václav Karlík and Jan Karlík of Nežetice are built into its exterior wall. The Church of Saint Bartholomew serves as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, religious services, weddings, and theatrical performances.
Nature and Trails
The Holovousova Trail passes through places in Holovousy and Chodovice associated with local legends and historical sights.
One station of the Holovousova Trail is Holovousy village square, where historic apple and pear varieties are planted, including Holovouské malinové. The trail also includes Holovousy Chateau as a station and then continues to Chodovice.
The protected Holovouská lípa stands on the road between Holovousy and Chodovice and has a trunk circumference of 4.15 metres.
Regional Traditions
Holovouské malinové is a historic apple variety that is no longer widely cultivated today and now occurs only as a standard tree. Its history dates back to the 18th century and is associated with French families who came to the estate in Holovousy.
The Slavnosti holovouských malináčů takes place on the first Saturday in October. It was established as an annual event and is a regular part of the autumn events in Holovousy and the entire region.
Since the first edition, competitions for the tastiest malináč apple and the best apple pie have been held every year at the Slavnosti holovouských malináčů. A sales outlet of the Výzkumný a šlechtitelský ústav ovocnářský Holovousy is located directly in the warehouse building on the institute grounds.
