Nature

The entire municipality of Holín lies within the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. The Prachovské skály Nature Reserve was designated in 1933. A 5-kilometre educational trail runs through the Prachovské skály and is not suitable for pushchairs. An accessible tourist route through the Prachovské skály starts and ends at the Prachov car park in Holín-Prachov. The Vyhlídka Míru and Vyhlídka Českého ráje viewpoints offer views of the Prachovské skály, the ruins of Trosky Castle and Ještěd.

Beyond Holín, the Čistý pond towards the Prachovské skály offers an opportunity for swimming.

History

The Prachov hillfort is designated as an immovable archaeological cultural monument. It contains settlement traces dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Age through the La Tène period and the Germanic-Roman period to the Early Middle Ages. The remains of Pařez Castle, also known as Husí nůška, are located on the north-western edge of the Prachovské skály. The existence of Pařez Castle is documented as early as 1370.

In Holín, a farmstead with house number 11 dating from 1850 has been preserved. A statue of the Virgin Mary from 1867 has also been preserved.

Culture

The Muzeum přírody Český ráj in Holín, Prachov 37, offers a permanent exhibition about the nature and history of the Prachovské skály, Český ráj and the Jičín region. The grounds of the Muzeum přírody Český ráj include a small botanical garden, animal enclosures, outdoor terrariums, ponds, an insect hotel, a beetle biotope and the Pelíšková zahrádka. Every year, the Muzeum přírody Český ráj organises the Žabí běh, bird-song excursions, a meeting of amphibian and reptile enthusiasts, as well as other public programmes.

Climbing in the Prachovské skály has a tradition dating back to 1907 and continues to be practised there as a living tradition of sandstone climbing. It is permitted only with the consent of the Schlik family, the owners, and in compliance with the applicable operating, climbing and nature conservation rules.

Routes

The Jičín–Holín cycle path connects the western part of Jičín with Holín and can also be used on foot. On the outskirts of Jičín, it passes under Road 35 through an underpass. Bus route 510 from Jičín serves the “Holín, Prachov, Skalní město” stop.

From 30 April to 30 September, a seasonal tourist bike bus connects Jičín, Holín, Prachovské skály, Pařezská Lhota, Mladějov, Sobotka and Podkost. The Zlatá stezka Českého ráje runs via Jičín, Holín, Prachov, Horní Lochov, Brada and Kbelnice; the circular route is 26.5 kilometres long. The Pelíškova dětská naučná stezka is a 1-kilometre circular trail around the Pelíšek reservoir and is also suitable for pushchairs.

Townscape

Holín is laid out as a village along a central road lined with rural houses featuring larger or smaller farm sections, as well as urban-style houses.
