Železnice: Hotels and Accommodation

The historic centre of Železnice was declared an urban conservation area in 1990. Following the great fire of 1826, the town was rebuilt according to plans by the master builder Jan Hertner in a unified Neoclassical style. Much of this development has been preserved and forms a unique urban ensemble dating from the Empire period.

History

The Church of St Giles was remodelled in the Baroque style from 1727 to 1739; its tower incorporates original Romanesque ashlar blocks. Its first written mention dates back to the 13th century. The town hall on Svobody Square and the Oldřich-Prášil Mill are also cultural monuments of Železnice. In 1903, Železnice was connected to the railway network when railway operations began on the Jičín–Turnov line.

Culture

The Vlastivědné muzeum a galerie v Železnici is housed in an Empire-period house dating from 1816 next to the Church of St Giles. Its archaeology exhibition reaches back to the Neolithic period, while the palaeontology exhibition extends back to the Palaeozoic. Another exhibition is devoted to the Prussian-Austrian Battle of 1866, which took place in the fields near Železnice.

At the Roubená chalupa, visitors can try spinning on a spinning wheel and watch weaving demonstrations. The interior of the cottage is wheelchair accessible; a separate tour can be arranged.

On Site

The Kupecký krám serves as the tourist information centre for Železnice and its surroundings. The brochure for the Naučná stezka po městě Železnici is available free of charge at the Kupecký krám of the “Vlastivědné muzeum v Železnici” museum. The Naučná stezka po městě Železnici itself is a town walk featuring numerous questions and a final puzzle.

Nature

Železnice lies on the edge of the CHKO Český Ráj protected landscape area and is a starting point for hiking trails. The area in and around Železnice offers routes for cycling tourism. A nature trail about the Battle of Jičín of 29 June 1866 also runs through the area around the town.

The planned Valdice–Železnice cycling and pedestrian connection is to be built as a lit shared path for pedestrians and cyclists leading to the local road in Těšín.
