Vlčice: Castle Ruins, Natural Monument and Cycling Routes
The history of Vlčice includes Břecštejn Castle, built in 1455 by the wealthy Zilvár family on a steep conglomerate rock. Only high walls of the actual castle remain; access is through former cellars. The municipality describes these ruins, formerly called Silberštejn, as its most widely known monument. A second castle in Vlčice can now only be identified by the terrain traces of a castle complex from the second half of the 13th century; it was discovered in 1974.
History and Buildings
Another historical focal point is the Church of Saint Adalbert. It is a registered cultural monument dating from the late 13th century; the originally Early Gothic church was rebuilt in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The church complex includes a Renaissance entrance tower with a rectangular floor plan and two storeys. It stands on the southern side of the cemetery wall and contains an entrance gate. In the cemetery next to the church stands an Empire-style tomb of former estate owners. The façade of the complex also features a commemorative plaque to J. A. Komenský and his stay in Vlčice in 1627. Vlčice Chateau is a three-winged, two-storey building with a mansard roof.
Nature and Bodies of Water
The Luční potok v Podkrkonoší natural monument also extends into the cadastral territory of Vlčice u Trutnova. It protects the population and habitat of the stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium). Brook lampreys and bullheads also occur in the area. In the Peklo recreational and holiday-home area, ponds can be reached via field and forest paths away from the main road.
Routes Through the Countryside
The Vlčice cycling circuit can be extended by climbing to Hrádeček and then descending on the road to Mladé Buky. The Komenský Route passes through Vlčice, by ponds, across meadows and over hills with views of the landscape. It is considered suitable for more experienced cyclists. An excursion route from Hostinné to Hrádeček Nature Park leads via Čermná and Vlčice. The routes mentioned therefore combine different types of itineraries: a circuit, a route through several landscape areas and a connection between places. For planning purposes, these routes can be distinguished according to whether they form a circuit, cross different landscapes or connect places.
Getting There
Vlčice railway station is located on line 040 between Chlumec nad Cidlinou and Trutnov. There is a bus stop for scheduled services near the railway station.
When choosing a hotel in Vlčice, travel duration, room category and cancellation policies can serve as personal comparison criteria. Those who assign different importance to culture, bodies of water or cycling routes can place these details side by side and tailor their travel planning to their preferred priorities. The local highlights can be compared separately with personal travel requirements. This allows travel dates, room category and cancellation policies to be weighted differently depending on the planned trip, without any single criterion having to determine the choice.
