Sankt Joachimsthal: Hotels and accommodations
Sankt Joachimsthal (Jáchymov) is associated with mining history, healing springs, and historic buildings. The exhibition at the Latin School Library presents a unique collection of chained books, known as “libri catenati,” which are connected with the beginnings of the town of Jáchymov in the early 16th century.
Culture and mining
The Důl Svornost mine dates back to 1518 and has been Central Europe’s longest-operating mine since 1530. Four healing springs are extracted from Důl Svornost and used in Jáchymov’s balneotherapy facilities. The Jáchymov Mining Landscape is one of five Czech components of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří.
Another insight into the mining history can be gained at Štola č. 1. The tunnel is approximately 250 meters long and was opened to the public in 2008. Guided tours explain its purpose, the original ore-mining techniques, and the mineral veins found inside. Štola č. 1 also houses a small exhibition on mining technology featuring mine carts, drills, and rails. The visitor route includes authentic mining areas from the 16th century.
The Královská mincovna Museum presents the history of silver mining, coin minting—including the thaler minted under the rule of the Šlik noble family—and the later radon spa industry.
Healing springs and educational trails
The world’s first radon spas were established in Jáchymov in 1906, using the region’s radioactive mine water to treat musculoskeletal disorders. The Radon Educational Trail ends in Jáchymov’s spa district. At several stops, it provides comprehensive information about radioactivity in nature, its measurement, and effective protection options.
The Jáchymovské peklo educational trail is 8.5 kilometers long and has 12 stops. It commemorates the lives of political prisoners from the uranium-mining labor camps in the vicinity of Jáchymov. The Jáchymovské peklo educational trail ends at Šlikovský hrad, from where there is a wide view of Jáchymov and the surrounding Krušnohorské kopce hills.
Churches and the history of the town
The Špitální kostel is Jáchymov’s oldest surviving architectural monument. It has a unique, entirely half-timbered construction and has preserved its original appearance. The Špitální kostel can be visited at designated times with a guide and during cultural events.
Kostel sv. Jáchyma was built between 1534 and 1540 as the first Lutheran church in Bohemia. After a devastating fire in 1873, it was rebuilt between 1874 and 1876 into its present form according to a design by the architect Josef Mocker.
Cycling route and water activities
Cycling Route 2005 begins at the lower end of the new Horní Žďár–Jáchymov cycle path, follows the former railway line to Jáchymov, and climbs along Dvořákova ulice to the settlement of Suchá. Aguacentrum Agricola is open to the general public and offers a 25-meter swimming pool, a sauna, a Kneipp path, a whirlpool, a water slide, and a smaller children’s pool.
