Vrchovany has preserved a large amount of original folk architecture. Since 1991, it has been home to a horse farm.

Culture and Landscape

The highly visible ruins of Starý Berštejn Castle, dating from the 15th century, stand on the basaltic Berkovský vrch; shortly after 1400, it was built by Jindřich Hlaváč of Dubá. Starý Berštejn is classified as an immovable cultural monument and has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. The castle tower offers a very extensive view of the surrounding area. Visits to Starý Berštejn are possible by arrangement with the castle’s tenant. Starý Bernštejn is located on a yellow-marked hiking trail.

Vrchovany lies on the south-western slope of Berkovský vrch, which belongs to the municipality’s cadastral area. Berkovský vrch is predominantly forested with pine and spruce; maple, linden and beech trees grow on the scree slopes.

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is also among the protected buildings: the chapel and the associated plots of land are protected as heritage sites. The present late Baroque chapel was built in 1801, possibly by enlarging an original building from the 17th century. It is a central, plastered solid structure with a regular octagonal ground plan, situated on elevated ground south-east of the village of Vrchovany. It is currently dilapidated and has no windows.

Horses and Activities

The main focus of Farma Vrchovany is breeding Haflingers. Farma Vrchovany offers beginners lunging training with horses and advanced riders trail rides in the countryside. By arrangement, a dressage arena, a show-jumping course and a free-jumping facility are available there.

The Jezdecká společnost Vrchovany-Obrok organizes show-jumping competitions in Vrchovany twice a year. The Skály u Nového Berštejna climbing sector can be reached from the Nový Berštejn and Vrchovany bus stops and, if necessary, from Dubá.
