Culture and History

Hejnice is home to the Baroque pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, together with an extensive Franciscan monastery. Since July 1, 2018, the pilgrimage church has been a national cultural monument. The single-nave Baroque church was built between 1722 and 1729.

On February 12, 1692, the Archbishop of Prague, Bedřich z Valdštejna, ceremonially declared the local Church of the Virgin Mary a monastery church and entrusted it to the care of the friars of the Franciscan Province of St. Wenceslas. Concerts, exhibitions, and lectures are held at Hejnice Monastery.

Hiking Trails

The long-distance hiking trail Via Czechia runs directly through Hejnice. The “In the Footsteps of the Iron Crown” hiking event was established in 1972 and takes place regularly on the second Saturday in September.

VIA NISA is a restored pilgrimage footpath almost 200 kilometers long, divided into eight full-day stages and ending at the pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Hejnice.

A 9.3-kilometer hiking trail begins in Hejnice and passes the Velký Štolpich waterfall. The Štolpichy National Nature Reserve encompasses gorges, streams with waterfalls, and ancient beech forests. In addition, a 20-kilometer hiking trail leads from Liberec to Hejnice.

Winter

In winter, a ski bus runs regularly to Smědava, the starting point for routes to Hejnice.

Other places include Cetenov, Osecna, Kobyly, Rynoltice, Krásný Les, Hrádek Nad Nisou, Janův Důl, and Zaskali.
