Turnov is known for its craft tradition, particularly the production of jewelry featuring Bohemian garnets. The 18th century is considered the golden age of stoneworking in Turnov, when local artisans processed the famous Bohemian garnets.

Culture and History

The Treasury of the Muzeum Českého ráje displays jewelry, vessels made of precious and fine stones, and repoussé silverwork from 1891 to 1954. The Muzeum Českého ráje also offers a permanent climbing exhibition entitled “Mountaineering – From the Bohemian Paradise to the Summits of the World.”

The vocational school for metal and stoneworking in Turnov was founded in 1884 and is now the Střední uměleckoprůmyslová škola. Sacred architecture includes the Kostel Narození Panny Marie, an important religious building with stained-glass windows.

The Turnov Synagogue dates from the early 18th century and is the only synagogue in northern Bohemia to have survived the Nazi occupation.

The Dlaskův statek is located in the district of Dolánky u Turnova, 3 km from Turnov. It is a typical and exceptionally well-preserved example of a house from the Pojizeří region. The former freeholder’s farmstead and administrative farm were built in 1716 in the picturesque valley of the Jizera and were declared a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic in 2010.
