Å iroká Niva lies in the rolling landscape of the Nízký Jeseník, in the Opava Valley. Almost 72 % of the municipality’s area is forested.

Culture and History

The Church of St. Martin in Široká Niva is a parish church completed in 1721 and protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The single-nave, longitudinally oriented masonry Baroque building has a prismatic tower on the central axis of the façade. The complex also includes a 16th-century vicarage, which was altered in the Baroque style and given an Empire-style façade.

The Liechtenstein chateau from the 18th century now serves as the town hall. Široká Niva is also home to a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk.

Landscape and Nature

The municipality of Široká Niva includes the Kunov nature reserve, designated in 1997. The cadastral area of Široká Niva is also home to the Tlustá Berta silver fir (Abies alba).

Trails and Regional Context

The Široká Niva educational trail runs through the village and its surroundings, providing information at five stops about the municipality’s cultural, natural, and historical sights. In the village district of Markvartice stands a bunker of the SLO VEČ 389ABR light permanent fortification system, type A-120, approximately 800 metres from the village centre, next to a paved road and around 100 metres from the Široká Niva educational trail.

Cycle Route 6073 runs next to the SLO VEČ 400BR bunker in the cadastral area of Skrbovice, part of Široká Niva. The GW Train Regio timetable lists Široká Niva as a stop on regional railway line 313 between Milotice nad Opavou and Vrbno pod Pradědem.
