Otice combines a distinctive geological feature with protected natural areas, historic chapels, and a vibrant sauerkraut tradition. The focal point is the Otická sopka: this protected natural monument lies in the cadastral areas of Otice and Slavkov u Opavy and covers 10.44 ha. It protects Tertiary basalt outcrops and glacial deposits. At the same time, the Otická sopka is the remnant of a volcano from the Lower Miocene; basalt is exposed in a quarry below the summit.

Nature and Trails

The Hvozdnice educational trail is accessible from Otice. Along the trail, there are 15 information boards, each featuring a map of the route. In the wider area around Otice, the protected Hvozdnice area comprises three ponds, a wetland, and pools inhabited by amphibians and birds.

Culture

The local landscape includes two cultural monuments. The Chapel of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is located in the centre of Otice. In the Rybníčky district of Otice stands the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, which is also protected as a cultural monument.

Local Traditions

Otice has had a tradition of sauerkraut cultivation since 1886; ZP Otice continues this tradition. This includes the Otické zelné slavnosti, which have been held since 2011 and regularly take place on the second Saturday in September. The festival includes a market with regional products. Visitors can sample traditional local dishes there, such as cabbage soup, duck with dumplings and cabbage, homemade cakes, and regional beers.
