Bystrovany – Local History, Riverside and Trails

Bystrovany has a tangible local history: the first written reference dates from 1277; at that time, the village belonged to Hradisko Monastery in Olomouc.

Location

Bystrovany is located in the Haná Plain, about six kilometres east of Olomouc. This approximate distance clearly places the village within the surroundings of the Moravian city without replacing its own rural identity.

The village can therefore be understood on two levels: its location in the plain and its documented connection to the history of Olomouc. Together, these describe Bystrovany from a geographical and historical perspective without reducing it to its proximity to the city.

Nature by the Water

At the entrance to Bystrovany, there is a riverside park next to the Bystřice River. There is also a weir on the Bystřice River. Near the fire station by the Bystřička River, there is a tourist information board and a place to stop and rest.

Culture and History

The Chapel of Saint Bartholomew, dating from 1887, stands in the middle of the village square. In front of the chapel stands a stone cross that was consecrated in the same year; the chapel had already been consecrated before the cross.

Commemorative ceremonies are regularly held at the cross in May and December to honour the fallen American airmen. Near the cross, seven American airmen lost their lives on 18 December 1944 when a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, which had been attacked by German fighter aircraft, crashed.

The village square thus brings together a religious building, a stone cross and a historical commemoration at a clearly identified location. The years 1887 and 1944 mark different layers of time: the creation of the chapel and cross, and the event commemorated by the ceremonies.

Trails and Activities

The Bystrovany leisure, sports and educational complex has tennis courts. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the Bělidla stop via Bystrovanské Street to the Bystřička River, then continues to a children’s playground.

The Jantarová stezka follows the Bystřice upstream to Bystrovany, where it connects to cycle route 6103. It is linked to main cycle route 5.

For trail planning, different types of movement can therefore be considered separately: the yellow-marked trail is described as a hiking connection, while the Jantarová stezka places the village within a network consisting of cycle route 6103 and main cycle route 5. The tennis courts complement these routes with a fixed sports facility.
