Velký Újezd: Hotels and Accommodation

Velký Újezd lies at the foot of the Oderské vrchy hills on a gently sloping hillside. The source of the Odra River is located in the surroundings of Velký Újezd, about six kilometres from the town.

Nature and Activities

The Memoriál Jaroslava Švarce offers hiking routes of 6, 10, 17, 25, 35 and 50 kilometres; the start and finish are at the TJ Sokol sports ground in Velký Újezd. The KČT lists the event as an IVV and Turistická-200 hiking event. Since 1968, the Memoriál has been organised every June as a long-distance hiking event.

Architectural Heritage

The Church of St James the Greater is the parish church of the Velký Újezd u Olomouce parish. It is a Baroque religious building constructed in 1749–1751 according to a design by the architect Mikuláš Thalherr, and it acquired its present appearance during those years.

The Vrchnostenský špitál dates from 1749, while the Poštovní přepřahací stanice dates from 1791. The Chapel of Panny Marie Lurdské is one of the cultural monuments of Velký Újezd.

Traditions and Culture

The traditional Velkoújezdské hody festival always takes place around 15 August. Since 1976, TJ Sokol has regularly organised an evening march in Velký Újezd in honour of 28 October. Since 1958, the Podhoran Theatre Association has staged theatre premieres.

Homemade Tvarůžky cheese was produced in Velký Újezd from 1895; this production ended after the Second World War.

Local History and Transport

Velký Újezd lies on an old trade route with a ford between Olomouc and Lipník nad Bečvou. The town has good bus connections.
